Vic going back a spell this was also by you .
I wonder if this will help at all by looking at the Crew Lists for the Ship
This Covers Home Trade for 1942 . So he should be listed in the Documents ,and you may then be able to see what date he joined ?? Only guessing on that though

1932-40 R 110000- R 217000 12,000
1940-48 R 217000- R 400000 22,000
avoid R 400000-R 500000 range
1949-59 R 500000- R 710000 20,000
1959-72 R 710000- R 910000 16,000

So prior to these there was no R prefix. So that Number would not have had the R as far as I can make out Vic.

Going to Vics number on dis,A book, there are also too many numerals his has 7. To my mind there should only be 6.

That Number will not be in that Series as i said ,as it was issued before the R came in,so i would at a guess say about 1925/7 ??

The Crew list will help as it should show his previous Ship or of it was his only ship then one would know the date of issue.
But all this costs Moolah mate! LOL

My Discharge Book was issued 9/11/56 number R661237, a number I used to be able to reel off when asked, now I have to look at my book lol

Then you say he was on the Henry Dundas,so that would make it 1943 ,so again looking at this is it possible that he would be in this Series of Ships and Crew.
