    Default Arctic convoy medals

My father-in-law was in Arctic convoys JW63, RA61, and RA64.
He also served in the Med, was at Alexandria, and also taking supplies to Anzio or Monte Casino forces.
He died in 1990. I tried in 2000 and 2006 to see if he was entitled to an Arctic service medal to no avail.
Has anything changed lately that means the family can now get some recognition of his war service?
    Who can I apply too?
I was also in the Merchant Navy on Clan Line and Union Castle Line in the 1960's.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Ken,

The answer is yes but you need proof of service in those Arctic convoys. Proof would be his discharge book or CRS 10 or failing that copies of the crew agreements for the ship's in question showing his name along with sign on and sign off dates. So the first thing you need are the names of the ship's he served in. Do you have that information?

Did he receive medals for service in the other theatres - if not I need his name, date and place of birth to check for any medal entitlement.

    Regards
    Hugh

    Hi Ken.
Maybe you could list all his ships here from his discharge book with dates if any, you never know if someone might be on site that sailed with him. You should also do the same for the same reason.

Hi Hugh, Thanks for the reply. I have his discharge book and I have copied it here below.

    Hi Ken.
My brother was on the Danby but it was in 1946, I thought I had a pic somewhere but can't find it.
Good luck with your efforts to get your Father-in-laws Arctic medal those men deserved much much more than that.

    Cheers Des

    hello Ken,

It's worth a phone call to the Maritime & Coastguard Agency in Cardiff. Ask for MR. NEIL STAPLES. He is a very helpful man and he will answer any questions you may have. He advised me to include my Dad's Death Certificate (which is not asked for on the MoD form). Be prepared for a LONG wait ! The whole process takes ages............
Certainly, send as many copies of documents as you can. Discharge Book. Mr. Staples will help you with what you need, I'm sure. You will also need the MoD form to fill in.
Perhaps now that the initial rush for the Arctic Star has subsided ,you may not have too long a wait. Again, Mr Staples is your man!

Also, if you go to www.convoywwb.org.uk[/url] you will find more information about Empire Celia and her position in Convoys JW63 & RA64

    Regards
    Brenda

There is a picture of her on Wikipedia. She made a voyage to Russia JW54A which my Dad accompanied in the Rescue Ship,' Copeland'. If I have read it correctly she carried 13 Spitfires on JW63 , which is the convoy that you are interested in. Have a happy time researching !

    Hi Ken.
Found that picture of the SS Danby on one of my disks there were four. By the smoke coming out of the stack the firemen were busy.
    Cheers Des

    Hello Ken
    See post # 6.
I hope that you are well on the way to the Arctic Medal. Incidentally, you can buy miniatures on ebay if you are interested in displaying the medals that way. Also a good idea if you want several family members to have medals.
Let us know how you go on, please.
    Regards
    Brenda
