Brian, sorry to contradict you but you must've had a Boarding Pass when you were with CPR.I remember one sailing day in Montreal I got a call to the engineers pantry that my uncle was on the quay wanting to see me.I came down the gangway jeans and Tshirt talking to my uncle bottom of the gangway, went to go aboard and was asked for my pass.I said you have just seen me come ashore, still need pass.My uncle took off on him called him all the stupid French B's under the sun,I walked aboard.I was asked many times in Montreal for my pass, sometimes they didn't bother there wasn't anybody at the gangway but I did see some of the lads borrowing a pass when stowing someone back home.

Jim B I beg to differ,
I spent 10 months sailing up and down the Great Lakes passing though Montreal many times, with no boarding pass on the MV Dundee, I also did a trip on the Manchester Regiment, again no boarding pass, if identity was ever asked, all I ever did was produce my MN Green Identity card, that I would never go ashore without.

With equal respect, Montreal port is the common factor here maybe only liners and their large crews needed control in Montreal. I sailed to Australia on the Oronsay and Orontes, again no boarding passes were ever used.

I don't care what you sailed on I am telling you that on the Empress boats we had a Boarding Pass whats the problem with that.It was not a shore pass like we had in BA or Lisbon or the States for that matter. If you didn't sail on an Empress boat how can you contradict it.

Boarding passes on the UCL Ships ! Were of no use those days in Ports around the Cape Route as the bleedin Guys on the Gangplanks were always asleep or Sozzled on duty! LOL

But from what I can recall the only time one needed a pass was when a Crew Member from one UCL Ship wanted to go aboard another UCL Vessel that may have been in Port merely for security reasons I guess ,but for myself I cannot recall ever having one,i did go on other UCL Ships that were in port at the same time, but I never used a Pass ,always just walked up the Crew Gangplank with no one ever stopping me ?? Wonder why Note this refers to UCL only.
    Cheers
