I may have posted this before. Our Willie goes shopping in Suez. Attachment 25502
Our Willie was 4th Eng on a !! LNG Carrier, lovely lad but a tad naive. It was his first time through the sewage canal.
He went to buy a few souvenirs from the bum boat men. He arrived with his purchases but did not look best pleased, He had the usual Suez bargains.
Anyway we asked him what he had paid for this and that, while he was telling us the Bosun came into the bar and gave Willie about $50 or $60 dollars. He looked a bit sheepish and when asked what was up!!! He went down with a $100 note the boat gave him a bag full of rubbish and no change. As I said Willie was a lovely fella but a bit naïve. Thankfully the Bosun was next in line and recovered a few $$$ for our Willie, no doubt the bosun got a free shop out of it as well mind :p
#16... one. Exception to this, was on a ship called the Dartmoor, the calls then ship to ship was “ How long you in for ?”... JWS.
Hi Marian.
I still have the Photo album I bought on my first trip through the Suez in 49, can't remember how much I paid but it was from George Roby of the Welsh accent, has a camel on the front in a circle with palm trees. I'm frightened to have a look in the soft cover after Cappy's experience, Betty reckons I get covered in blood enough as it is.
Cheers Des
Des, Your album sounds identical to my dad's. He wasn't married at the time so his sisters received them...small mercy:p
Did any of you ever go ashore in Aden?
There was a story in the early 60's of two yanks who went ashore with a load of confederate dollars.
Apparently you could buy them in USA as souvenirs at that time.
The locals it was said saw dollars and welcomed them with open arms and the two yanks bought a load of gear.
Is this true, not sure but if it is then the locals must have been a bit mad when they attempted to change them at the bank.
Yes been ashore at Aden John
However have not heard of that Yarn before!
Also was there in the RAF (Wireless Operator)
Cheers
