    Exclamation Torpedoed ship

My mum was telling me of a time in the early 1940s when her dad went to Glasgow to join a ship and she thought she'd never see him again but he came home the next day as they had been torpedoed not long after leaving. Does anyone know the name of this ship?

Marie without appearing too flippant, I know what your grandfather would like to have called the ship, the SS Good Fortune. Regards JS

I think then he'd have had to call a few ships that as he survived more than 1 sinking...like that cat Oscar (aka 'Unsinkable Sam')!

    Hi Marie,
According to his pre 1941 records he served in the following ships in and around 1940. These cards do have mistakes and omissions but the only other way to find out if your family lore is true with respect to the ships in 1940 would be to check the Crew Agreements at Kew of the known ships in case he served on others not shown on the CR2 cards. Crew Agreements usually show the name of the previous ship.

24.12.1939 - HARPALYCUS - this ship survived the war.
20.3.1940 - DALLINGTON COURT - this ship survived the war.
27.4.1940 - HARBERTON - this ship survived the war.
23.11.1940 - JOLEE - She was purchased by the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) in 1941 and renamed EMPIRE FLAMINGO. She served until June 1944 when she was sunk as a blockship at Juno Beach.
17.3.1941 - WINONA COUNTY - 1941 transferred to Britain and renamed EMPIRE WHALE for Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). 29.3.1943 - torpedoed and sunk.

    Regards
    Hugh

Thanks Hugh. I have employed a researcher down in Surrey to find and copy documents; am looking forward to see what he finds.

Yes, thanks. I'm still waiting to hear back from the researcher I've employed to see what he comes up with...should be interesting as my grandad was at sea for so long.
