here:s a good one for all departments, Shaw Savill Lines, SOUTHERN CROSS, slipped down the slips back in 1955, from harland and wolfe belfasts yard, and was a very unique occasion in merchant shipping history.{what} any takers regards lads terry.;)
Southern Cross was a remarkable ship for her time, with significant innovative features. She was the first major liner with funnel and engines aft, which created substantial midship passenger space, the first passenger ship that carried no cargo (except stores) and the first major modern liner with all tourist class accommodations.???????????

ooooooooooooo vernon i might just have you here mate:rolleyes: all you say is correct this was to do with the actuall launch down the slips regardless to what department you belonged to it was unique in maritime history? regards mate terry
In 1953 Basil Sanderson approached Queen Elizabeth II, asking if she would be willing to launch the ship and choose a name for her from a list of suggestions. The Queen agreed to launch the ship, and chose the name Southern Cross for the ship. When the ship was launched on August 17, 1954, she became the first passenger liner to be launched by a reigning monarch.??
