Not always Mike, my fathers number was R96096, only 5 numbers (issued 1927)

Not strictly true I am afraid.
The 'S' prefix has never come before the 'R' prefix and is not limited to 5 numbers. The 'R' prefix has never been just 6 numbers.
When the Continious Certificate of Discharge (Dis. A book) was introduced in 1900 there were no prefixes, purely numerical, and by mid 20s had reached 7 numbers.
In 1925, I believe the first Dis. A of the 'R' series was struck i.e. R1. I am working on this now.
