Hello Daniel,
Maybe he volunteered for the Rescue Ship Service? _ although they were defensively armed. My Dad (Master of 2 Rescue Ships in Arctic & Atlantic ) was often heard to say that he thanked God that he was in the business of saving lives and not taking them.
However. concerning the weapons (from his notes), he put the entire Crew on Gunnery Practice - in case anything happened to the Gunners. So I don't know where he would have been faced with a Conscientious Objector.
