    Default Discharge book

    Hello,
Firstly I am a diver, are we considered part of the merchant navy at all? May sound like a silly question but it is not very clear all in all.
Second, I have a seamans discharge book. can anyone tell me, are there any benefits to be had by having a discharge book? Does it ientitle the holder to any discounts or benefits?

    Thanks in advance

    Default Sherman or what! hah!

    Hi Tank!
Would just like to give you a warm Welcome to this very good site!
Here you will find lots of info, good Crew and with luck also find a few old Shipmates!
So sit back, relax and just enjoy the trip!
Hope we will have you here for a long time!
A site truly worthy of the British Merchant Navy!

Well i am not too sure on this ,but as you have a Discharge Book then i would say by all things YES! you certainly are classed as MN what else could they possibly tag you with!
As for any entitlements well again this i wil leave for someone with a bit more knowlegde on the subject.
All i know that there must be some sort of Seamans help for old timers like us!
Not that a lot would need it but there are some i am sure who do!
Hope someone will give more info on this!

    Cheers

G'day Tank and welcome to the site. If you care to list the ships you dived from there may well be some who remember you. So while you wait sit back with a cold one and enjoy the voyage.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Louis sounds like you are speaking from experience !!! .........lol
Alas Bettys Bar is no more not that I ever went there ! whats the old saying about not shi---ng in your own back yard !

Sailed with quite a few Divers on the North Sea as far as I remember they had to sign the Articles and as they did have Discharge Books I would say that they have to be classed as MN.

As to benefits bit unsure on that point all I know is I have never benefitted from having one !

    Welcome to the site Tank

No I have to disagree the benifits where enormous for having a discharge book. With out that I would not have all the great memories that I now posses. Not to mention the great people that I worked and met while at sea. No the benifits of having it where the makings of this little indian.

Maybe if I explained that I have never been able to swim might put you in the picture and unfortunatly I have lost a couple of teeth through decay and never drank in Betty's bar. Lost a front tooth when I ran into a broom. Will now leave the thread to those that want to be serious about it otherwise I might get the post police on my back for high jacking this one. lmfao

    Greetings Tank,
Welcome to this great web site as I expect that you will find it interesting.
With regards to the discharge book you have well this is interesting to me so let me explain.
First of all I have an official Merchant Navy Discharge Book issued on the the 12th November 1957 in Liverpool on entry to the British Merchant Navy of which I am very proud to have served, sadly for only seven years, but I have to admit that it was one of the most interesting/enjoyable times of my working life.
However I have a second Discharge Book which was issued to me in Newcastle long after my Merchant Navy days when I was working offshore in West Africa on maintenance ships/barges including a short spelll on a Diving vessel.
By all accounts this was legal especially if you worked on a British registered vessel which of course I did so it would be very interesting to find out as to where you actually worked as a diver and your location/company as I know a lot of divers.
With regards to if there are any benefits with the dischatge book you that I cant really say.
I am looking forward to a reply you never no this is a small world I might even know you.
    best wishes,
    John Aspin (R685343) Ormesby-Middlesbrough
