Hi Tank like the other guys have said if you have a discharge book you must be or have been MN as for benifits I have heard there is sum kind of hospital benifit but haven't yet found out about it and also if your children or grandchildren would like to go to the Holebook School ex Greenwich school you will get assistanse and preferential concideration Otherwise welcome to the club

Aye but if you read Tanks post he was asking if having a discharge book entitled him to any benefits ! and that was what I was replying to.
Having a discharge book enabled me to travel the world visit some very dodgy bars, sleep with a variety of women! and 17 years of memories something that I would never have been able to do had I not gone to sea.

The fact a person has a discharge book does not mean the person is in the Merchant Navy. The fact a person goes to sea and has a discharge book does not mean he is in the Merchant Navy. A lot of people work on Merchant Navy and other Naval ships at sea but are not part of the Navy. A worker on any vessel is different from a crew member. The fact a person signs on a vessel does not make him a crew member. It is a grey area.
When I work as a Surveyor I may sail on the vessel, I am there on the ship owners business, similar a diver he is there on the business of the ship owner. We both sign on but are not crew and not at that time in the Merchant Navy. We both have discharge books.
The Master has a legal obligation to,at all times have records and numbers of the persons on board. This applies to all ships. To sign them on an off is the easiest way to keep a record.

Hi shipmate I have a question? About Discharge books Did all ships have them? I met some one, who said he sailed on many ships, useing diffirent names', and books He would not tell me his reason? why would he have done this? Could be something to do with the law or tax or unknown reason ? Have you come across anyone like this when you were at sea? this man is no con artist but very clever ,I spoke to his wife ? a very nice lady I never come across any one ,who was at sea like him? :confused::confused::confused:

Hi Shipmates' Hi Happy john in oz,Thank you for your information, but this guy claimed he was deep sea and on foreign ships and he held diffirent discharge books, not in his name ?So far he will not give a reason, Why or how ? he had them is this possiable? How could he have british book as far as I know in my time you had to prove I.D. and photo was stamped by B.O.T. I had mine from the sea school I think most of us did unless you were cadets? Going back to his time at sea 1950 to 1970 were some men at sea on the run escape from jail ? or witness program?or scandal in some way?As I said he is not telling porky pies .
