Do you miss the sea?

Dont think the Liverpool splice was accepted all those years ago on the Aussie coast. The old wires of 12, 24 and 37 wires to a strand would also be hard to find today. Most wires that are made are for speciality jobs, although think the old anchor wires of rigs were still of the old type and 37 wires to a strand but these were big 37 mm wires, and believe they even measure the wires different now. These anchor wires are attached to anchor cable and on the end is a 22 ton anchor. But that's a different subject. Cheers JS

Nay John lad, I would not have the temerity to say such a thing, it may well be the practice in our sea going industry and the word ferrules now certainly rings a bell, but nowhere in my Rigging Manual does it mention the word ferrule (or variations there-of), the latest revised edition in my possession is 1996 and was still current in 2008. As far as SWL is concerned in the crane industry there is a different set of formulae depending upon the construction LH/RH, rotating LH/RH or non rotating, I thought I had left it all behind me.aagh!! Anyway I know we have a couple of ex riggers on site they may be able to input further

They may decide to stick their 18 inch spikes where they shouldn't. Down here would be left hand rotating going around a High. Des would probably know unless he hasn't been carried away with John of Oz"s Feral Government observations. Cheers JS

my wife has the same condition, and for years had trouble sleeping, since being diagnosed with sleep apnbnia ( spelling properly incorrect ) she has for the past couple of months been using a breathing contraption with a mask and sleeps eight ten hours a night most nights, ( oh its free on the nhs )

#64..Tom my commimerations to your wife Sleep Abpnia is not a very nice condition and leaves one in a weary condition for most of the time. I got sick of the mask and haven't used for a few weeks, but realize will have to re-start using due to tiredness throughout the day. Must say one of the reasons leaving off was to get out of the bad boys room, as the wife reckons the machine keeps her awake. Got my own back last year when she had two hip replacements, the only way she got out of hospital almost straight away was because I said I had plenty of experience of giving injections and they have to receive daily injections to stop blood clotting for so many weeks after such an operation. I didn't say the injections I used to give were in the right hand upper semi circle of the right buttock though. Hers were in the stomach muscle and she used to squeal when I administered and said I was too rough, I just told her she would never make a sailorman, and to get on with it. However saying that there is no way I would let her give me the same injections might be too painful. Whenever I wear the mask though I never get right through the night wearing, usually find it across the room somewhere, must tear it off thinking are drowning.. After making a few feeble jokes and giving advice for him to see a Doctor, thought he told me once he had sleep apbnia and used to wear a mask himself, maybe he was trying to escape from the naughty boys room as well. the ferule was used when making wire nets together with a ferule spike, made it easier to reeve the wire through. The Liverpool splice was only supposed to be used as a standing part not a working part hence the locking splice, used for working wires. 3.2.1. Then lock 4and 5 tuck your 6. then over one under one all the rest of tucks.As used on Aussie coast.As for using L.Pool splice as a working wire the strand can and do draw out i have seen it happen a few times. That's the reason the locking splice is used for, working wires.

You saved me a bit of typing, you are absolutely correct. On the Aussie coast I think the wharfies had linx eyes as not many bad splices got past them even the old preventer wires were subject to examination, though I must say I never saw a spliced wire come undone. I still have one spike I used when I started splicing, very handy if ever someone decides to break in, they don't like it up em.

Frank one of the nicer memories was having your cabin light put on at 0330 and being called the first time for watch. A minute later the light going off and apologies from the farmer sorry I forgot to put my watch back an hour last night. Cheers JWS
