Think it may have been a cost thing
My earlier Bristol Ch . tramps .The All round light, was the norm.
Didn't encounter a Aldis til going upmarket ,with the Cragmoor. Single berth accm'dation too. As opposed to previously open foc'sle, tin plates ,mugs, etc.

Re: ship call signs
The Aldis is really a daylight signalling lamp as it is directional. But was also useful for other things like pointing it at various points on the weather deck during bad weather to see if anything adrift like loose tarps or securings on deck cargo. I used it on one occasion as a search light to try and pick out the heads of survivors among floating debris. JWS

She was armed air sea rescue trawler called Robert Hastie from 1939 to 1944. She was stationed in the fishing port of Killybegs in county Donegal Eire. Her main base was Londonderry where she replenished with stores and fuel etc.
