Lifeboat in antarctic.
When I went to the Antarctic in 2009, I came across an old abandoned Lifeboat on a beach on the Antarctic Continent.
It has intriqued me for a long time now. Why is it there,? who took it there?, what happened to the ship it came off? and what happened to the men off it?.
It was in such an isolated place. it looked so lonely, I thought there must be a story behind it.
Anyone got any clues please???
Cheers
Brian

Re: Lifeboat in antarctic.
Very large & very old. Perhaps from one of the whaling fleet.

Re: Lifeboat in antarctic.
Brian,
Iv'e found the same photo but this one was taken in 1999....87-whaling-boat.jpg.
In the bottom right hand corner it gives the site name which I've read and all it says it's an old abandond whaler, but nothing more than that. Perhaps if you track the history of the location, Half Moon Island you may find out more information

Re: Lifeboat in antarctic.
Many thanks for that John Albert.
It certainly is the same boat in the same place ten years earlier. amazing how you found it.
It even has a Penguin on it, So it does seem to be a whaler after all. They must have just abandoned it.
I just thought there may have been some dramatic ship wreck. or from Shackleton's days.
Cheers

Re: Lifeboat in antarctic.
I was looking at the two rusting straps each end of the boat, that have eyes, and was wondering if they were for attaching a sling for hoisting??
Just wondering

Re: Lifeboat in antarctic.
I have just been on the google for Half Moon Bay and the same boat is there.
I don't think it will be there for long now.
The Antarctic is a very beautiful place to visit, and superb wildlife down there. It was the very best trip we have done. It lasted for 35 days..
Cheers
Brian
