Brian, I must say at one stage in my own career at sea, I was thinking how different it would be to get dressed up and pissed up every night and day on a passenger liner. Common sense set in and worked out I would never be able to afford that life style. Apart from never getting through an interview board for such a job, the accent would never have been what they were looking for in any case, apart from the film star appearance usually required together with an appropriate lineage. Passenger liners and cruise ships doesnt give an aspiring mariner much of a choice, might as well go into the hotel management business as far as I would have thought. I feel sympathy for young Steve, but really he has the ball in his own court. There is shipping there in small lots so to speak, it is just different types of shipping. The days of the tramp dont exist anymore, so he has to make up his own mind what way he wants to go. If he makes the wrong choice it will be a wasted experience for him. We all know what we would do in his case, and even we would differ as would have different aims in life. I think he is probably under one disallusionment though, this belief officer and seaman. there is little or no lines re. living conditions and in a lot of cases work load, the only difference is money, and there is now not a huge difference. This in the type of specialized ships that I was on anyhow. In 1987 I was on 33 pounds a day. The mechanic on same vessel his total work was maintaining 4 100 HP outboard engines was on 35 pounds a day. I was master on vessel and doing a mininum of 12 hours a day watchkeeping plus other associated duties, when I handed my notice in they offered all sorts of money, I told them they were 12 months too late and went elsewhere. 2 years ago I got an email from the managers son saying they were opening an office in Singapore and how was i getting on, I told him I was retired and getting on very nicely thank you after leaving such companies that they ran. There is still work with such companies but unless they have altered their ways, would never recommend to anyone. Cheers John S

was using those Adverts as a means of getting any Seafaring job, Once you are in the ships, you can then look around and having Some seafaring experience, which is what he is lacking at the moment he would stand a better chance of employment, At the moment he is being declined due to his lack of experience in the industry.
They are also advertising for Cadets which is what he wants.
A start in any department is better than No start at all.

######am well surrised john at the income of the master of a vessel was so poorly remunerated in 87 .....at 2 pound 75 an hour i find that shocking.....the going rate for a machinist in a clothing factory was 2pounds 42 per hourfor a 35 hour week .total 85 quid .....no wonder people stopped going to make the sea a career apart from the lack of vessels.....makes me wonder what happened to the leader of our wonderful seamans union who promised all ratings 2hundredpounds a week....mr slater stated that to me personally......but then its easy to talk the talk but the walk is a diferent matter as our other friend of the seaman the lord prescott showed......regards cappy

Cappy that was my pay at the Piper Alpha. The motor mechanic was not there at the time he was on the previous ship he used to go around the fleet checking the outboards for the FRCs. When he was on board they used to take one seaman off the ship. A seaman was more use than he would of been on the night. The Chief Engineer had a Class 1 cert. steam and motor. You got people on these ships who were too proud to go on the dole. This was not by any means the worst paid company doing this work, some of the lowestoft companies the seamen only got 4 days leave after 4 weeks out, after that had to go on the dole or back to sea, most were ex fishermen and had I suppose been used to that, but certainly not 18 pounds a day as some got. We all talk on here as though it was yesterday when work was plentiful, it was not in the late 80"s and later. If you were settled with a regular company you were ok. There again I was with Seaforth Maritime and thought I was settled until I retired but was made redundant in 1986 and the company sold together with all what I thought were my retirement benefits which I lost. I dont have too kind feelings to the British Shipowner. As I said in previous posts Australia was totally different in attitude and conditions of service, but even these have been eroded since I retired. Also seamen had to pay their own travelling expenses and course fees if they didnt stay with the same company for a year. These ships came under no Union wages scheme as such. Whenever a reporter approached me after the PA I would only discuss with him the wages and conditions of the seamen. They soon got the message when they realized it was the only thing I would discuss with them, they of course would not print that, they were very choosy on what they wrote, never the truth, months after I still had a couple of the same seamen with me on either the Johnshaven or the Sandhaven, this company was paying reasonable wages good ships and conditions, they were asking about some personal gear they had handed over to survivors, a list had been made out with the value of individual items. I got in contact with Occidental the owners of the platform and they said they had paid straight away to the shipowner the amount stated, it was only coppers but a lot to them. When the shipowner was contacted his reply was they should of contacted him for the money, he had no intention of passing on. This was I think because we had all sought better conditions elsewhere. Everything I say on here is not embellished in any way, you will certainly get the whole truth and nothing but the truth from me, more than can be said of the Press. Cheers John S.

you know john i hesitate to think were this wll end .....i am not a defeatistof any sort i am the opposite.....but also a realist.....the world and tis country is running out of income and the powerful put more away while the less well off have less to manage on .....i have no overdraft now but god knows when i ran my business i borrowed large amounts....secured by all my possesions of any sort .....my average company over draght was 100000.....they charged me 10 percent per annum.....i eventully paid for the factory and all machinery and this and my assets became mine ....if i had lost the business i would have had nothing......the bank has an overdraught facility on hand if i need it .....they charge me nothing as i would not use itanyway i now have noneed of there money ...inthe post today i recieved info that were i to use the facility the were making it easier for all there account holders .....so if i used 3000 of this money theywould only charge mre 3 pounds per day......so 3pounds times 365 equalls 1095......so in my day my borrowing3000 wold have cost me per annum 300 ....against todays 1095 what happenswhen the money runs out regards cappy

Cappy Ive an insurance policy to bury Gwen and myself, if they dont renege on it. Would not dare to get into debt now, although they keep trying to raise the limits on credit cards which I dont want. I feel sorry for people who are having to pay high and excessive council rents like my brother, and can just keep their head above water. The whole system stinks to high heaven. Cheers John S

If anyone saw the Panorama .programn last week on the benifit system that exists in Brent council in London where we are paying to house people with 7 kids in one case, rent of £600 a week, offered accomodation in Coventry, nice three bedrooms et6c, and they refused to go, realises we are running a country we cannot afford, sooner or later it has to go tits up KT

If experience is the only issue I would crew a ship for 6 months for free as long as they paid my travel to the ship costs. The rest (food mainly) would be provided on board. I just want a chance to get the experience I need, but it seems to be very difficult to do that now.

######john pats mum died over 3 weeks ago .....she had a small ..insurance death benefit it still has not been paid....what a state for a family who did not have the werewithall to pay for the funeral and her other expenses .....iam pleased to say that we paid over 250 pounds to the poppy fund in respect to our fallen soldiers sailors and airmen etc to showour respect for the dead......but was not a happy bunny to be accused 3 weeks later of not showing respect for the dead.....but such is life regards cappy
