Jayne, don't worry about the colour the Union Castle 'boys' will love it. On a more serious note has the inside of the lens been painted or covered with film, if affirmative then Roger's explanation of paint colour distortion still seems the most likely and the blue started out as green.Quote:

just asked my husband and he says no, and all 3 pieces of glass are separate and moulded to fit!! This really has everyone scratching their heads!!! xx
No sign of any gimbals, the two round loops on either side would have fitted around a pair of fixed vertical stays.
The colours have me confused, it does look blue, rather than faded green.
Thank you don, thats what we thought. I dont know much about these things to be honest (hence the mis-spell of gimbal in my original post!!) Just thought we may be able to find a little more out about it through this site!! My mother in law was about to throw it away so we rescued it!!!! Any ideas as to what boat it would have been on? The blue glass may remain a mystery forever!!! hehe!! xxQuote:

I think the lamp would be hoisted from the handle that is is now hanging from, the rings or lugs on either side, indicate that the angle of viewing would have been important, they would have ridden up a pair of fixed stays which would give a fixed orientation relative to what it is fixed to.

I have seen these or rather two colour lamps used on rope stays with a line attatched to the top ring , so the lamp stayed true to the mast , on an old sailing yacht , It was an oil lamp so needed refilling , relighting and hauling back up every night
Yes it was oil, my husband has fashioned a light fitting now to sit inside it so we can connect to mains and its brighter! It's just so unusual, we love it :-) xxx
