i think he wrote that one while he was on the job.
I do remember not being allowed to light more than two cigarettes with a lighter. Apparently this stemmed from wartime when the ship was supposed to be blacked out and sub commanders would see the flickering light from the lighter. Well it was still going strong in the 60s.

No whistle in the engineroom of a steam ship as it may be a steam leak.

Hi Tony,
I heard that as well, but it was the third light.
Sniper saw the 1st light, lined up on the 2nd and fired on the third.

No ex ships cooks out there that can answer my original question regarding opening a can upside down?
My daughter is now embellishing the story.
She claims when I saw the can, that I screamed like a little girl and jumped up on a chair.
Not true. It was more like a 'manly' scream, and as far as jumping, those days are gone [in more ways than one]
It was more like a hop!
Kids these days tend to exaggerate.

I open all my tinned food upside down seriously,
1. How long has the tin been on the shelf from were you purchased it or got it from and i still wipe underneath the can before i open it.
2. You will find that as with any caned food all the contents after standing upright for a while will settle on the bottom of the tin. Terry.:)
Now you guys are getting me worried.
First off with the MN slang post no one knew half of my words.
Now same thing with the upside down can.Was I on ships from a different planet, or was it excessive rum?
