Eating Places

Gosh we must be hungry horaces
I remember being in Maceio and eating in a chain called the OX where they kept coming round with fantastic sides of beef, lamb, pork and saudages that they carved in front of you. It was an all you can eat place and for around $20 even a ham shank would have been filled to excess.Beer and wine was extra but the slad bar was free. This was at the time of the Macaraina dance craze so after filling me boots to excess it was off round the bars watching Brazillian lovelies in skimpy outfits dancing the night away. Heaven.

Docs posting and picture of Bunny Chow reminded me of another brilliant pub meal. This was just on the outskirts of Hull,. a bit of a way from the docks, at Skidby.They served huge fresh Yorkshire puddings. At first it was just the Yorkshire pudd & gravy and being straight out the oven was truly scrumptious. It was only a small pub but as time went on they added extra extras,curry,beans etc. Its popularity soared after a visit by newspaper gourmet/contributor Egon Ronay and a write up in Dailt Telegraph (?). Next time I went on leave you couldnt get in the place,people queueing etc. Well deserved of course but not what you want when you just want a nice pint. I did find that good pubs that started serving food often changed (in my opinion) and lost the atmosphere I wanted for a PUB. I dont mean pork pies.boiled egg or a decent sarnie but full meals.

I well remember the BA steaks, a baby beef steak in a bun, steak about one and half inches thick!!!, washed down with a cold beer, i wonder what its like there now??? KT

It is a tourist area #4 Dock is a Marina for yachts, all the warhouses converted to apartments and the dockside is Italian Restaraunts,, 25 De Mayo is now just a street of shops and offices and banks, No Bars. to get a drink in BA now you have to go into a Hotel. only La Boqa is still the same but Very Quiet. One or Two young ladies, daughters of our young ladies of the 50s.

Had my first T Bone Steak in a Diner in Buffalo NYS, with fries and a Side Salad,. could not believe the size of it and so tender, other place that i will never forget is the Seamans Mission in Montreal, tasted my first Hamburger there, have never tasted another like it since, was truly delicious with relish, MacDonalds are rubbish, also the Apple Pie and Real Cream After,

no 2 looks a bit of all right, ! was in Lisbon in 88/89 all finished there also.

dos anyone watch the program man verses food the American show he has to eat the house special in different eating houses some of the rubbish they eat, its worth a watch.jp

You forgot to mention what is reputedly the best steak house in B.A. The "Cabana Las Lilas " restaurant is in the refurbished warehouses at #4 Dock. The back side of the restaurant, facing the dock, is wide open giving diners an excellent view of the dock area and the museum on the opposite side. As you say, it is all very touristy now, with the refurbished cranes from our era and the tall ship tied up near the restaurant. I don't think that B.A has lost any of it's allure and still feels as vibrant as it was back in the 60's. The only negative comment that I'd make is that it has a very European feel to it and, as such, the women do not have a Latin look to them and cannot compare to the females in other S American countries. Nevertheless, it's still a fabulous place to be in.

I quite agree Stuart.I stopped going out to my local pubs for a lovely quiet pint on Sunday years ago.I don't like being surrounded by the food smells and noisy slurping eaters and their brats all talking with full mouths ,and uncollected half-finished microwaved meal plates all around.
I quite understand that pubs have to do it in many cases in order to survive.

I feel the same about Christmas Dinner in pubs-how sad that the parents can't be bothered any more to make an exciting mid-afternoon family Christmas meal at home -with Dad popping out to go for a quick well-deserved pint at noon -one day in the year he wasn't late home for his dinner !

Christmas day in Melbourne, casino open at midday. By 1300 hours the place is full, families eating in all the restaurants, kids running amok around the place. Grandparents playing the pokies, no grandkids in sight. Welcome to the 21st century.

Best meals, in the Indian market Durban eating curry from a banana leaf sitting on the kerb. In Brisbane at the slaughter house and buying a two pound T bone steak for half a crown and taking it back to the ship to cook.
