Gravesend peanut

I was at Gravesend in July 77 and we were definately called Peanuts then. It was all rather amusing as although we were supposed to only go to town in our Uniforms, many of us smuggled civvies out and got changed in the Flying Angel club just up the road. I went one further and left some stuff with relatives who lived in Gravesend! :)

I was there around 1972, I was told that in certain schools during the war and rationing the new comers got the last choice of sweets and goodies and the only goodies left where peanuts hence thge name lol

Most of us on here Ray remember there being no sweets and goodies during the war, peanuts just after the war were known as groundnuts and it was the intention to make a butter substitute out of them, but nobody would eat it or buy groundnuts and they changed the name back to peanuts, but it was some years before they became accepted as a norm.

Name peanuts probably came about because most of these budding sailors boys showed their willies to the local girls who then told their mother it reminded them of a peanut and when asked 'why was it small' replied 'no it was salty'

Hi Bill, read somewhere it was the site of an hotel outside of which a vendor sold peanuts circa late 19th century I was a "Peanut" 67/68 hope this helps.

Keith, I did my time there autumn of 1956 , never came across the term "peanuts" , I wonder where it came from?

Hi Bill I was there Dec 56 were you still there then.Never heard the word peanut then.Does anybody recall peanuts being called monkey nuts.?
