Was this common practice

Can any of you guys tell me why this ship the IOANNA, that the name runs ford to aft, was this common practice on ships, looking forward to your comments.

I am not sure Brian i was tracing a ship called the Leoborg, and this pic is what i come up with, i thought it might have been reversed.

Crew or shore made up stencil with ships name on it, painted port side first, the reversed stencil to paint stbd side, something very similar happened in C.P. when they changed their funnel design and on one ship had the logo pointing different ways on either side of the funnel.

Would look ok if seen in rear view mirror on your car the same as an ambulance is spelt backwards. Was the photo taken in a mirror. Cheers John Sabourn

Good job they werent painting the plimsolls. That was one that used to catch people out when you said which way did the they go round, was the circle (summer load line) ford or aft on the port side and which way on the stabs. side. That is ford or aft of the other load lines. The answer was you used to keep in mind A... holes aft. (circle) was aft on both sides. John Sabourn
