Evan, M and I went on leave from Suva mid 1961 to Papeete on the JVO. We then flew TAI to Sydney via Noumea and returned to Suva on the JVO via Wellington and Auckland. Here are some pics I took.

Who could ever forget a visit to Quinns, went there several times and each visit was an education.
Took my wife to be there, she was a passenger and I was the Extra Second Steward on Rangitoto.
Hi Lewis
I was in Pepeete on board the Orion in 1962 and Quinn's bar was the one nearest to the wharf ... it was reputed as being the " roughest pub in the World " by experienced seafarers of the time ... a real eye-opener for a first tripper like myself at the age of 18 y o ... had a girl take me into the woman's toilet and she held my hand while she had a leak ... no such luck these days lol ... seen the French coppers concuss a giant of an A B , had a sore head for a while so he did ... that same A B entered the boxing comp. on no. 2 hatch and he was knocked all over the ring by a Steward named Bob Bates who's brother Peter fought Henry Cooper and won on points ... they where handy Boxers the Bates family ... Happy Days !
I was on the Southern Cross in Feb 1961 and remember Quinn's Bar too.
I went there a few times on the Rangitoto 62/3/4 great place. I had some Hinano beer labels on my suitcase and it was always a cause for conversation on a train or somewhere. Quinns Bar was the in place, loved the toilets :)
My dad served on the Rangitoto 1961-1963 ish. His name is Barrie Victor Cumbers
Would this not be his Pouch Then
Cheers
