I would be grateful for feedback on whether these numbers look reasonable and also for some information on the numbers issued around 1972.

I think if you start at post#1 and work your way through, you will find answers for any questions that you may have, assuming that you already haven't done so.

Stuart Henderson's point about not seeing R 4????? numbers seems to be backed up by Colin Hawken (R 510709) and Fred Lacey(R 525985)both from 1949 which were issued 2 years after R 396040. Any R 4????? numbers out there?
Mick O'Brien's number UK 018117 from 1974 tallies with Doc Vernon's thought that the change from the R prefix to the UK prefix took place in 1972.
Is there anyone with a number issued in the 1968-72 period ?
thanks again for the help

If it is any help
I registered July 1970 & my number was R885849

Re: Discharge Book numbering from WW 2 to 1972 for British seamen
My original discharge book was R848167, supplied in April 1967. In January 1973 it was replaced with the new style discharge book, but the number remained unchanged.

Hi. My discharge book number was R618131 issued in Liverpool in 1954.
Re: Discharge Book numbering from WW 2 to 1972 for British seamen
David, my Discharge Book is number R911xxx issued at Tilbury 24th July 1972 on completion off my 14 week deck course at the National Sea School. I surmise that the U.K. prefix was introduced at the start off 1973. On the 16th January 1973 I was issued a new style Discharge Book in Belfast still with my R911xxx number. Hopefully this will help with your research.

Why the R911xxx is there something we shouldn't know
