I have had three discharge books during my time at sea and all have had the same R number as posted in my Profile.
The first one issued in 67 on entry to the MN at Liverpool, the second one again issued at Liverpool in 73 when they changed the style, dropping the columns for reporting on conduct.the third one, a new style one issued by the MCA at their Tyne Office but still has the same R number as the other two. So in a 40 yr. career at sea I went through 3 discharge books and If I got the chance would love to go back and fill up the last one.
In contrast my Father went to sea in 1926 and only had one discharge book throughout his career up to his death in 1960.
Which just goes to show how long the trips were in those days.

Hi, In the 7 years that i was at sea, i never held a passport, only my id card,Ref another post where i flew to Berlin from Hamburg, and got into big trouble. Joining ships abroad we probably had our discharge books with us, i am not sure about that, but once on the ship, all we had was ID cards, and from my troubles in Berlin i understood that Id cards were only valid within a certain distance of the port you were in?Can anyone remember these points? just wondering, regards Keith
