My Discharge Book number is R898056 and was issued on 2nd July 1971. This book was only used for my first three ships and was replaced by the new version on 19th January 1973.

My number was R886427 issued Dec 1971. Most likely older stock as the office in Dundee was not very busy. Mine was also changed to new style without the 'Sobriety' column, in Feb 1973. Same number entered in Biro pen, not printed. I had to recover it in 1994 after the dog took a liking to the binding glue. I got funny looks when signing on after that as the colour was maroon!

Stuart Henderson's point about not seeing R 4????? numbers seems to be backed up by Colin Hawken (R 510709) and Fred Lacey(R 525985)both from 1949 which were issued 2 years after R 396040. Any R 4????? numbers out there?

Mick O'Brien's number UK 018117 from 1974 tallies with Doc Vernon's thought that the change from the R prefix to the UK prefix took place in 1972.
Is there anyone with a number issued in the 1968-72 period ?

    thanks again for the help

Interesting. Mine is R886349 also issued in Dundee in June 1970. Indeed not a great amouint of books issued for an 18 month period.
