M. N. WIDOW HEARS OF HUSBAND’S HONOUR
Keepsake of Mrs Eva Winifred Trencher, 5 Tower Street, West Hendon, Sunderland, is a small combined powder compact, mirror and wristlet –type watch, given by her husband, Second Engineer Officer Charles H Trencher, Merchant Navy, before he died.
Torpedoed in the South Atlantic in 1942 he had the set in his pocket throughout his ordeal in the water and subsequent 12 days in an open boat.
His death in September 1945, was attributed to illness contracted through exposure, and Mrs Trencher has just been informed that her husband’s name has been added to the Merchant Navy Roll of Honour.
Twenty –five years of age, Second Engineer Officer Trencher joined the Merchant Navy in 1941after serving an apprenticeship at Doxford and son’s shipyard.
Mrs Trencher, who served in the WAAF during the war, has an eighteen –month old daughter.
