Meaning of the saying.
Some of the old hands may remember this"Turn in on the rake"whats it's origin what does it mean?

Turning in on the Rake is turning in fully booted and spured.
When I went as a coal burning fireman on the BEECHFIELD I always turned in on the rake. I would stagger out of the stokehold doing four on and four off by the time I had dumped the ashes and got forard and down the focsle it would be 20 minutes past say 4am I would be up again in three hours so I crashed down on the Rake covered in coal dust and ash. no time to get undressed and then dressed again at 7.30 for 8 to 12 watch..
That is the meaning of turning in on the rake.
Maybe some one else has a different idea of it.
