    Default Shipping Companies

According to Lloyd's Register of Shipping 1894-95 (p249) the ship Gilcruix built by Whitehaven Shipbuilding Company of Whitehaven in Aug 1886 was owned by N Western Shipping Co. and managed by Ismay, Imrie & Co. I have failed to find info on this company; can someone please help with details.

    Thanks

Ismay, Imrie & Co. I believe were the White Star Line (Oceanic Steam Navigation Co Ltd ).

Gilcruix One of the ships owned by the Liverpool White Star Line / Ismay, Imrie and Co., Liverpool.

A four-masted iron ship built in 1886 by Whitehaven Shipbuildings Co., Whitehaven.
Dimensions: 88,15×12,80×7,38 meters [289'3"×42'0"×24'3"], tonnage: 2304 GRT and 2239 NRT.
    1886 August
Launched at the shipyard of Whitehaven Shipbuildings Co., Whitehaven, for Ismay, Imrie, & Co., Liverpool.
    1895 June 8
Sold to Knöhr & Burchard, Hamburg and was renamed Barmbek.
    1914 August
Arrested by the French cruiser Chatâteau Renault and was towed to Brest.
Sold to Compagnie Navale de l'Oceanie, Brest, and renamed Pacifique.
    1921 March 2
In collision with the American steamer Naamhok 8 nautical miles South St Catherine's Point. Was condemned after having been towed to Le Havre, later towed to Caen where she was broken up.

I also found this in the Harland and Wolff records about the ship DAWPOOL which mentions the North Western Shipping Company :-

The Dawpool weighed 1697 tons, 262.9ft in length, 38.3ft wide and 23.3ft in depth. She was built by Harland & Wolff on their own account and launched in January 1880. She was sold, at a loss, to Ismay, Imrie & Co.of Liverpool with Harland & Wolff owning a quarter share. It was placed in the ownership of the North Western Shipping Company, which controlled all of Ismay, Imrie & Co’s sailing ships.

It would appear that the North Western Shipping Company was a business arm of the White Star Line (Oceanic Steam Navigation Co Ltd ) and only existed to control the sailing ships belonging to Ismay, Imrie & Co who were the White Star Line. Hope this helps.

If you ever visit Maryport in Cumbria there is a building there, a hotel I think, that has the white star line flag embossed on its facade, I think that one of the founders of white star line came from the place. I visited the town doing some research into our family history as back in the 1800 hundreds ancestors on my mother side weren't ship owners in the port, named Suiters.

Jeez mate I must go back to Specsavers.
I thought for a minute you went back to the 1800's to find your ancestors.
