M/v Narya Off. No.341290 G.T. 1594.22 . According to my discharge book, I joined this ship in Dunkirk on the 6/8/77 as a Cook/steward and left her 4 days later. I Can not remember joining or leaving her, who owned her what sort of ship she was or anything else about her. I have a vague recollection of her being in dry dock. That is all I can remember,does anybody know anything about this ship.

The only Narya I can find on Mirimar had the No. 7024718, though the grt is the same 1594. Built and launched in Spain in 1970 by Ast. Construcciones S.A.,Rios, Vigo Spain for Coronet Shipping Ltd., London. Placed under Turnbull Scott. Sailed under a number of names 78 LADY SERENA - 87 NIKOLAOS G. - 87 VENETA - 92 ARISTEA - 01 TAISEER M. Caught fire & wrecked 4.08N/47.35E 1.2.04

I spent a few months on her sister? ship Vilya, extended home trade around '70-71.
They had a massive flared bow that was supposed to keep timber deck cargo dry. Turned out to be a bit of a weakness as the welding on the bow gave in somewhat during heavy weather and we spent 12 hours a day hand-pumping in a tight space until repairs could be effected. Apart from that she was a lovely little boat. We were one of the first British boats allowed back into Alex' after the six day war. I remember the bosun nearly fell down the hold when an anti-personell charge went off the other side of the hull as he put his head into a tween-deck winch garage. I think it was also on her I froze my nuts off as a couple of stowaways had previously made it out of Rostock on the Narya and the authorities spent about four hours searching us before letting us sail. That was in the days when they didn't like to see their citizens emigrating. It was also on her I had the pleasure of doing the Kiel canal.

Calvin,your ship,the VILYA ,like the NARYA was also wrecked eventually,but much earlier still .


　

VILYA (built 71) was sold in 75 becoming ZEIDA.(Moroccan flag)

On 4/4/82 she (as the ZEIDA ) foundered in 42.05N/9.32W (about 25 nm WSW of Vigo) with the loss of 10 of her crew.



Coronet shipping also had a third sister,the NENYA, which became the Moroccan flagged ZERHOUN in 75.
Like her other two sisters she eventually later in her career foundered , S. of Livorno in 10/2002,and was broken up as lies in 2004.

Thanks for that Gulliver. You coming up with the Nenya made me twig they were named for the rings in Lord of the Rings.

Don't seem to be lucky ships do they. I recollect now as we were in the anchorage off Alex' a rather larger Greek boat going in to port whilst still weighing anchor fouled our cable and gave us a good spinning before stoving in our port gunwale and centre winch housing.
