Help sought re. Industrial Hearing Loss

Hi folks,
Can anyone shed any light on compensation for Hearing Loss due to noisy environment ? I have been told by a specialist that my hearing is well below what it should be for a 71 year old bilge rat and that I should seek compensation. But here's the rub: when I told him of the different companies I had sailed with and that all of them had gone to the great dry-dock in the sky, he lost interest. He said it would be a waste of time trying to trace them and even harder to show which of them was responsible for my problem. I think I saw something on the forum some time ago on this subject but so far I've drawn a blank. Any ideas ?

Hi Kevin.
I had a hearing test in November after a phone call from a firm of `Accident Lawyers`. they said I was 20% deaf, so they asked me who my employers were. I told them I was a Seafarer with many different Companies, many now disapeared.
You have no chance , they told me, and that was that. I went to the Audiology Department at the Hospital and they gave me another test, a better one. I am a little deaf on high pitched notes, so they are fitting me with an aid on 9 February.

Thanks for your message. It sounds like you have had the same experience. I also had a test at Burnley's Audio Dept. and they said mostly what you did. I have a 25% loss on the starboard and 10 on the port and they said if I find things "getting difficult" they would fix me up. I am not finding it too much trouble yet except in a crowd or if the wife sits on my wrong side!

I tried after a few Years of being underground in the Gold Mining Industry with all that noise but I was told that after so many Years I could not claim at all! So here I sit with the Ringing Bells in the Ear and as Deaf as anything in the Left Ear! Not all that good on the right side either! And will I wear my Hearing Aid!! Not on your Nellie! Irene gets sooooo mad at me! LOL

Hi Vernon.
I have two hearing aids and the wife still says I'm deaf, but there is selected deafness. I take my hearing aids out and put on earphones to listen too music. They say that when you get back in the car and switch the engine on and the radio is bellowing in your ears; your deaf, the funny thing is the slightest noise when I'm asleep will wake me up.

Understand your problem, I am both deaf and breathless, but who do you sue. 4 hours on an electric chipping hammer, open steam winches on other side of bulkhead etc. We lived a noisy life though the poets will say it was balmy. Guess we who went to sea were built to take it, and so we do.
