Swan Upper , sounds painful. How many times have you been told , when a kid, be careful when near Swans, they can break your arm. Anyone ever heard of Swan breaking someones arm?
Back to the Albatross when I was on the Olivebank we had one crash landed on the wing of the bridge. Big bugger of a thing stayed there for a day or so and if anyone went near it would go mental. Think it was Serang got hold of it and launched it over the bridge wing. As it fell towards the sea it opened its wings and away it went. Funny how they follow ships for days on end then get up one morning and they have gone. Great things to watch just so graceful.
We have black ones in WA and the Swan River is named after them in Perf. JS

That must have been the one next to the Marine pub, in the mid sixties there was only one indians and one Chinese. I was going into that Indians one night but was waylaid by some BP apprentices who had been out celebrating but were thrown out of said Indians because they claimed they could see maggots in their boiled rice.
They picketed the restaurant until the police moved them on.
#15 As Cappy will tell you Tony that was standard fare in Runcimans and was considered a luxury. JS
I believe the swan upper is a person appointed by the Queen (sorry, now King) who does an annual count of the swans on the Thames. All swans belong to the Monarch…..
Surprised any gaff in South Shields would have swan, more likely rabbit or horse!
I should have been sent to the tower.
Many years ago as a young lad along with dad and a couple of mates we would go duck shooting down at All Hallows on the Thames.
Getting a bit dark, a dusky evening when I saw a bird flying past, put the gun up and fired without looking correctly.
It disappeared into the car boot at a rate of knots with us gunning it out of there.
Swan eats a bit like Duck but with a bit different flavor.
Now I am totally opposed to any form of bird or game hunting.
