    PALS OF USED TO BE

    Where are they now,
    The friend or that pal,
That slogged through the mud by your side.
    Where are they now,
    The friend or that pal,
Who's voice down the trenches once cried,

I saw some of them resting,
    The friend or that pal,
Just off of the road in a field.
I saw some of them resting,
    That friend or that pal,
Set aside the sword and their shield.

I thought that I saw them,
    The friend and the pal,
All weary and clean out of breath.
I thought that I saw them,
    The friend and the pal,
In the empty ditches of death.

I heard some of them singing.
    The friend and the pal,
The songs they once sang so well.
I heard some of them singing,
    The friend and the pal,
Long silenced by chorus of shell.

I saw some of them sleeping,
    The friend and the pal,
I wonder just what is their dream.
I saw some of them sleeping,
    The friend and the pal,
Their blanket a carpet of green.

I know they're still with us,
    The friend and the pal.
Though resting in lands far away,
I know they're still with us,
    The friend and the pal,
    Not just on Remembrance Day.

Another, inspiring and thought provoking writing,
    relevant to Remembrance Time .
