Something to remember is, that most of the British soldiers who were sent out to fight in this war were young National Servicemen (conscripts).

The Korean war, just as was the case with Vietnam, was a war between major nations with Korea used as the battle ground.
Poor squaddies from many nations gave their all for this stupid fight.

Last year while on a cruise to Japan the ship called into Busan in South Korea. We took a visit to the cemetery.

One of the best kept war cemeteries there is, one that gives a terrible feeling of both despair and hope.
A small Chapel there has a video which the group we were with watched.

It tells the story of the war and the cemetery, then the story of the one USA soldier who was not returned to USA.
Married only three weeks before being sent to Korea, his widow never remarried and a couple of years ago her ashes were interred in her husband grave.

There was also the story of the UK vet who for the last 35 years has made a visit to the cemetery to see his old mates.
He will also have his ashes interred there.

After the video there was not a dry eye in the place.

A permanent UN guard stands duty on the gate.

Sorry to dispute but some of the figures give for numbers do not compute.
According to a sign at the cemetery only 1 USA soldier lies there and there is a monument to some 800 soldiers of unknown countries who lost their lives in the conflict.

Up until recently this was the only Memorial in the UK for UK servicemen who died in the Korean War.

I have a question about Korea.
My pal, who recently passed away, was conscripted to serve in the Korea conflict.
He was a serving soldier in the British army.
Through no fault of his, he was stationed in Japan.
Because of that, he was not credited with serving in Korea.
Any comments?

Hi Den.
The only way I see it is if you don't put a foot on the soil no credit. I suppose if there is anyone who served in the forces on site they maybe able to elaborate.

I think Den the problem is that though conscripted to go to Korea he was sent to Japan.
From what I have been told the medals for any campaign are only awarded to those who actually where there.
At the time of the Korean war Japan was still considered to be , 'not a friendly nation' so as he served in Japan his award would have been for being there.

They didn't touch the ground, but were awarded the medals?
My friend was sent to Japan to help the wounded from Korea.
