Denis can remember the Korean War being described by the media as a Police Action. Who were they trying to kid ? JS
#31.. Didn’t put a turban on and get a part time job to make a few bob , with George Robey Denis ? 18 months in Egypt you have my sympathy. Cheers JS
Hi John.
Perhaps they were trying to recruit policemen to go out there, it was getting tougher by the year to keep getting British people killed in Americas wars.

I often wonder what the success rate was in 1949 when the recruitment for the Palestine Police was at its peak.JS
#35 Probably quite good John, as a lot of ex Military Policemen probably fed up with being hotel door commissionaires, probably offered attractive salaries and conditions, and some will have missed the action like we miss the sea.
British regiments we're sent to Palestine and many of our servicemen we're killed out there trying to sort out the problems.

Which regiment did you serve in Denis?.
Apart from your Suez medal, you must also have been issued with HMAF Veterans lapel badge. Although it is small, the badge takes pride of place on many blazers worn by army Veterans.

Hi Fouro I was in the Royal Corp of Signals as a Radio Operator, which later lead me to study as RO in the MN and probably watching the ships transiting the canal sowed the seeds for wanting to try it. Rgds Den

Hi Fouro,
Thanks for this, very interesting and humbling. I sailed with a Chief Cook on the 'Otaio', John Callum, who served in Korea as a cook in the Army, he did not really speak of it. As a matter of interest Mr. Mackay, (Fulton Mackay), from the TV series 'Porridge' wears Korean ribbons.
Cheers, Paul.
