I started my first voyage at sea when I joined Oriana as a Deck Boy in February 1968.

I was 15 years old and my pay was 24 pounds stirling per month.

I remember when she ripped out one of her twin props when she touched the side of the Panama Canal.

I responded to an advert on board and transferred to sister company Overseas Contaner Lines in March 1969.

Hello Atkinson,

We must have sailed on Oriana at the same time, finishing at Southampton on 20 March 1969.

Yes, Commodore Clifford Edgecombe was the old man and it was an unusually long voyage for us. We did the usual South Africa, Aussie, US West Coast and the Caribbean but then instead of heading for the UK we doubled back to Aussie then Hong Kong, Singapore and Ceylon.

I've still got my 20 quid, made to measure, mohair & silk suit from Hong Kong somewhere. :p

I didn't like the Bay Boats - too much sea time and too little shore time.

Hello
I too, was on that voyage having just joined the ship as a Bell-boy November 1968. I can remember my cabin mate buying a 20 suit whilst we were in Hong Kong. I bought a made-to-measure pair of shoes. Cannot remember what I paid for them. Happy times.

I have just been browsing and discovered this old thread so do hope someone can assist. I too signed on the Oriana in S'oton in November 1968 and left her ion 20th March 1969 in S'oton. I know we did what i was told was her first Caribbean cruise , but cannot remember where else we went in the world. I think we went to Oz and N.Z. but not much else.
Anybody who can give me all the ports visited during this voyage.
I do remember her as a great ship and know i had a great time, but not sure where. I was signed on in the E/R as an oiler, and was not asked back at the end of the trip. Remember the Pig was really good and really great crowd in there all the time.
