Calling all Bibby and ex Bibby employees.

I was interested in the Bibby Gazettes posted here, but found them a little hard to read in the format they are.

I have an idea to create a database that will allow one to see the information iin an easier manner.

For that I need any gazettes that you might have saved over the years.

The ones that have been posted here by Gulliver are going to be passed on to me in the near future, so I will have some to start with. I have been in touch with Bibbys and got a call today from them promising they will look and see what they have and send them on to me on loan. That call has prompted this appeal.

So if you have any you are able to lend me, please get in touch. I will reimburse postage and keep the collections separate so they do not get mixed up and return them when complete.

All this will need to be carried out by hand so will likely take a while, but the sooner I get started the better.

So if you have held on to any (sadly I have not) please get in touch.

Bibbys have been back to me very quickly and have supplied copies for the following dates.

1/4/1972, 19/2/1974, 18/9/1974, 1/3/1975, 19/9/1975, 16/2/1976, 10/9/1976, 23/2/1977, 1/10/1977
15/3/1978, 27/9/1978, 30/4/1979, 26/3/1980, 21/5/1981, 21/10/1981, 6/4/1982, 27/9/1982
22/4/1983, 21/10/1983, 13/4/1984

so if anyone has these, they are not required by myself. That will cut down on the postage.

Thank you.

Dear Paul ,
After our PM two weeks ago,and your Post here today,am I to understand you do not require those hard copies of the Bibby Gazettes that I have put images of in the Crew List section of the Gallery?

I was going to send you all 7 copies but you appear to have 6 of them that Bibby's have now sent you.I will list the ones I have:-
Bibby Gazettes

# 41 Spring 78
# 42 Autumn 78
# 43 Spring 79
# 44 Autumn 79
# 45 Spring 80
# 51 Spring 83
# 52 Autumn 83

So the one that Bibby's didn't send you would be # 44(Autumn 79). Am I correct?

I will certainly send you this to keep if required-no postage required from you-or you can have the others too if you want?

They have been round the world,as our ex-Bibby Line 'wallah' member Phil Jones in Tasmania kindly posted them on to me about 18 months ago.

Let me know.

Cheers !

Yes, Bibbys came back very quickly. There is not need to send duplicates so only that errant one that you have identified will be needed please.

I'll PM you my address.

It is taking awhile to enter all the details. I'm only on my second gazette, but should speed up as most of the crew will be entered and just need to be selected.

Thank you Davey.

When I worked for Bibbys I *thought* I was working for a small shipping company by the standards of BP, Shell etc.

In keying in the Gazette data, I am only about half way through, and already have over 1750 crew members entered (mainly officers) as per the Gazette.

Now I know they did not spend all their time with Bibbys', but still.:)

Ah well, back to the keying in.:D

I have entered all the data for the photocopies received from Bibbys.
Have Autumn 1979 left to do as supplied by Gulliver. Thank you Davey. :)

Will soon be constructing the pages which will take some work getting the data to a website so only wish to do it once. :)

Any gazettes for dates other than those mentioned previously would be most welcome before I proceed any further.?

As you will be aware the Gazette dealt with two specific periods in the year, Spring & Autumn.

Already I have had two members post me other details and thought it would be nice to have your service displayed on the site as well as the official gazette.

So if you would like your details displayed on the website I don't think it will be this one, but I'll start from my own webspace anyway, then feel free to PM me that info.

If you could supply it in the form of

Your name eg Steel, EP
Ship Joined Left Rank
Hampshire 01/04/1972 12/09/1972 Cadet

Additionally if you have crewlists of the ships you sailed that are not in the Gazette, then send those as well if you like pretty much in the format of the gazette.

Hope to hear from some of you. :)

What a nice idea you have going there Gasman,i think more should actually try and do similar for the various Companies!
There are siofew records of Crew etc Online, and something like this could revive the old memories!
Well done,i must really look into this type of thing, only to be honest i am useless as far as Building a Website is concerned, and i dont think i would venture into it !
Hope someone else may look into it!

There are many that must have Crew Lists etc like me for instace for the Company i worked with,so hopeully this may start a good thing!

It desreves a 5 Star rating! which i have given!

Thank You Doc,:o

It is really a lot of work however. I never realised how much, but that is mainly down to the quantity of the data that needed to be entered.:)

Fortunately/Unfortunately I am out of work at present and so have time on my hands and at least it keeps my brain active.:)

Good news first.

I have a temporary job. :)

Now the bad news.

Little time to progress with this at the moment, so it is going to take a little longer.

It will be done though. I promise that.:)

Hi all,

Had a little time off the last few days and managed to get a draft version up. Still needs a fair bit of work, but the data is all there for now.

Davey, I'll be adding your data as a separate page when I have time.

My version of the Bibby Gazette can be found here (http://www.paulsteel.webspace.virginmedia.com/gazette/index.html)

Edit: Davey, your details are under 'Other Crew'

Thanks Geoff.

MD Green kindly sent in two more gazettes, December 1969 and April 1971. They have now been added.

New gazettes now on the site. Oct 1964,Nov 1965,May 1967,Nov 1967 & Jun 1968. New names and a few new ships (even two SS ships) :D

These were provided by Winston Tun which led to the creation of the Contributor's page to thank all those who have supplied gazettes.

I've also added a Memoriam page to the Derbyshire as I was sent a scan for Sept 1980.

I also found a few duplicates which I removed (as if I don't have enough typing to do :D)

Virgin in their infinite wisdom are closing their webspace, so the original site will only be there until 22/04/16.
I have managed to move it and can now be located at Bibby Gazettes over the years (http://www.bibby-gazette.co.uk)

I see that "Trade Winds" report that the V Group has brought out Bibby Shipping. Although V Ships do have a large presence in the U.K. they are not a U.K. company so that is another U.K. shipping group gone.

V Group have only acquired Bibby Ship Management, not Bibby Line which is still part of the Bibby Line Group with its head office still in Liverpool.

John Harding from the Biibby Facebook group has managed to obtain almost all missing copies of the Gazette.
I have a lot of work to do to get them all onto the site as I am now working full time again and my eyes are not what they used to be.
It will be done however. :)

Gazette Update.

Thanks to John Harding, all missing Gazettes have been obtained, and so all the Bibby Gazettes (53 of them) are now on the website.

Hi all,
Hope everyone is managing to stay safe and well in these trying times.

Just wanted to mention that there is now a link on the Gazette site Home (http://www.bibby-gazette.co.uk/) marked Served With which will allow you to request a report from the database, that will show all the ships and shipmates you sailed with (but only as far as the Gazette can report).

I've had people say I missed a ship, but they were on that ship between Gazettes being issued. Remember it was just a snapshot at a certian date.

I actually run the report and email you the results.
