Changing of the Flag

Our PM is dead set on to change the NZ flag so if that goes ahead that means we will loose the Red Ensign

Have no problem with the Fern Leaf as suggested. Here in Oz there are some who want to remove the union flag. Yes you can but it will not change history, though there are some who think it will.

There is a rather good drama series on BBC 2 here at the moment that shows all the hardships that the first settlers to Aus. experienced and the life that the prisoner's who were transported there suffered. Think it called something like "Destitution".

There is no question that the Union Jack will be removed from our flag in time as the republican push eventually get's it's way. It keeps on coming up as the aspirations for president of Oz, along with that great pot of filthy lucre, flutter within the pollies breasts. With the mob we've got here it wouldn't take long for the the rot to set in as it did when that prosperous land of the 1930s on the South of the River Plate got scuppered. There is no one around here who is within a bull's roar of becoming the 'The wizard of Oz'. Then all the w*nkers will vie for the chance to design a new flag, say a cane toad or a snap from the 'mardey grar' for example. We have good reason to revere our beautiful flag that has flown over many historical events of bravery and bloodshed. Shipmates, we have all experienced republics in our travels. They are mostly grossly massaged like3 a sturgeon for its caviar roe.

Thankfully we currently have good support for the Monarchy which has served us very well indeed in respect of our parliamentary system. If it ain't broke so don't try to fix it or call in a consultant.

We have been blessed with the fact that the whole continent is one country rather than a conglomeration of 'liberated' possessions. I am sure the BBC will show how hard a life our early settlers had. I opened the Site and saw this heading and I couldn't let the day finish without blowing off some steam. On this quiet Good Friday my M was digging through some old papers she was given when her elder brother passed away some years ago. Included was an ancestry chart that showed her great-great grandfather and spouse were farmers from Ireland. We went straight to Google and found that they were among those brought over by the pioneering horticulturist William Macarthur on government grants to open up the Boorowa, Crookwell areas in Southern NSW. It was quite exciting. We found that they were sent out on the sailing ship Lady Kennaway in 1841 and that her great grandfather was born at sea. Amazingly, she was just a little girl in the early 1930s and remembers him sitting on their back porch. He apparently lived into his nineties. The Lady Kennaway was a convict ship on some voyages and brought many of the Irish workers on no convict voyages. As I mentioned in an earlier post, her maternal great ++? grandfather was on a convict ship earlier in the nineteenth century and with the punishment as related to the crime, out here that's badge of honour.

Oh, but how sad the general character portrayed by AB Banjo Patterson and Henry Lawson is blowing away like dust in the wind.

There is no doubt that the younger generation will go for the change of the flag as a lot of them do not care about what the old flag means to us oldies .
in a way i suppose you have to look ahead but i hope it is a flag that will represent NZ and not some gaudy flag

HI All.
In Britain the different tribes had their own flags some dating back centuries; this has been passed on to the Commonwealth countries by British immigration, the idea was for their men to rally around the chief where the flag would stand when he was in a spot of bother. No native tribes that I can recall ever had this system, but now they think some sort of rag they have thought up should represent the whole country, fair enough for them to have a flag or symbol to gather around, but why change just to suit someone who thinks that the rag he wants to put up is any different than the one that men for centuries have defending with their lives once history is changed it is gone forever, and mostly not for the better.
