Everything changes in time, countries names viz. countless in Africa, Formosa, Ceylon, East Pakistan, ports such as Bombay and many others. People in general arent satisfied with what they have, by people these are the ones at the top leaders of the country. There is famine world wide, people living the same as they did 3000 years ago, and we all worry about flags. The Union flag represents 3 countries England Scotland and Wales, which will be a long time if ever will be changed. However people do change in their expectations of what they can get from life. It must be pretty obvious that the target of Utopia for the world is never going to happen in this century and many more to come, unless by force of arms, and the West is unwilling to be seen as doing this. Our way of life in our own work spheres is very easy to see the advances made which a lot of us resist, but are swimming against the tide, as is going to happen in any case. The likes of a new generation asking people on here about certain things at sea and trying to compare them with their own knowledge is beating ones head against a brick wall. You are comparing being able to box the compass in points and quarter points as against being able to have knowledge of the GMDSS system. The magnetic compass in 50 years time people will be asking on sites similar to this what it was. However when you come to flags you come up against peoples history and pride of place, what is said on here is correct, one should be proud of their own heritage and their ancestors accomplishments and should have no reason to change if that is correct, it is one thing that should not be changed just for the sake of change. There is no need to change any flag unless you are ashamed of it. JS..............Maybe someone could expound on the history of the Hammer and Sickle which I always took for a political flag of Russia, and how now they have reverted back to what I assume was their National flag of bygone years. Also the Aboriginal Flag as want to fly by certain Authoritys in Australia, maybe the History of this flag and whether or not it was of not too far back origins. JS

The Aboriginal flag of Oz was designed not by them but by the settlers. Tough times for the early settlers many who came from Ireland and so may can trace their heritage back to there. But also more from UK ad o many now are into tracing the family tree. Yet for all of that there are a number who say change the flag we now have nothing in common with UK. Nothing could be further from t truth, had it not been for the Poms we may well be speaking French or Russian. Wonder if hey would still want to change?
    Happy daze John in Oz.

As a rule I normally don't get into these kind of discussions but must just say that I totally agree with Capt that Aussie has to now take stock of what is happening, there are far too many Ethnic Immigrants ,and if not curbed now will for sure in the future make Aussie a place that one will have to think hard about immigrating to!
But hopefully something will be done in the very near future!
All we can do is wait and see!
That's all from me on this. End of.

Canada went through this in the early 1960's. the PM of the day decided that we should have our own identity, before that we were under the red ensign with the Canadian coat of arms in the lower right corner. this suggestion of course opened up a deluge of verbal abuse from the opposition parties and from the various veterans organisations. the PM was accused of selling out the country and having no respect for the veterans who died for Canada during the two world wars and other conflicts, all under the red ensign. others saw it as a start to distance the country from it's ties with the monarchy and Britain. This all fell on deaf ears and the search continued until early in 1965 the design that we now know, was adopted. fifty years on you rarely hear any arguments that it divided the country, most of the younger generation think we had this flag from day one. It's all history now, we that grow old, know how it was.
    regards, stan

We all acknowledge that a flag is a symbol of a nation's pride ; not only in past history but also in hope for the future. A rallying cry in times of trouble and a tribute to fallen hero's. If change is for changes own sake then once again we are being manipulated by a noisy minority. The vast majority of us Aussies and Kiwis are happy with the union flag in the corner. It acknowledges our roots and salutes our ancestry

This of course will change when all our new chums from every nation on the planet want to put in their two bob's worth. What a mess that will be. How do you encapsulate a tidal wave of refugees ?

Please keep all suggestions politically correct.

Neil, your Smiley is spot on for me. I don't expect to be around but my descendants will be, no doubt. They will have developed along with the tsunami without the encumbrance of first hand knowledge of the past. We were in a somewhat vaguely similar exposure in the early forties with just the Timor Sea between us and the 200 million on the archipelago above.
