The Japanese in the war days all their personal came under corporal punishment when we was in Lo Yang there was hundreds of the Japanese Navy personal and we often saw the punishment being given to the Japanese and believe me it was very brutal and that was what we had to put up with if we did something wrong even if it was very minor .
It got worse if you gave in you had to take it i was very lucky that i never got any real savage beatings one or two minor wallops .
They had a very strict code of discipline

    Hi Lou.
I think the Japs troops were mainly the poorer people and had no concept of the rules of war, they believed the Emperor was god. They were treated like the seamen of the Nelson and before era when they used to whip the sailors who had done something wrong around the fleet. But that didn't excuse the ones who were very well educated, the ones who led them, more of them should have been executed after the war.

I think that a lot of the Japanese had never had any contact Europeans there was a very big difference between some of the officers and the lower ratings in
LO YANG we was more in contact with the Japanese we was in contact with them day in and day out but when we got sent into Changi Jail it was only on the working parties that we had anything to do with the Japs or Koreans
But Changi was a hell hole compared to Lo Yang

From what a Singapore taxi driver told me Changi prison there is still a hell hole for some. They executed 60 there in 2014, 58 foreigners, 2 local for drug running, murder and rape.

There was a book I read one voyage back in the early 60's, ' Crime and Punishment in The Royal Navy'. Whipping around the fleet was one but there were some other just as horrific ones. Keel hauling maybe the worst as few survived.

Not sure if it was either of those Marian, the first one without the date would sound right.

They run a tight ship, John and one can't help thinking how many thousands of decent people are still alive, unharmed and enjoying a comparatively safe way of life due to the removal of wrongdoers from the community. It's harsh, it's administered in a far better fashion than most of the regimes and you only need to look at the numbers you quote and take note from a week's media of what the law abiding population here is subject to. I don't know how it is now but I have a good idea that it won't have changed that much since the 60s, 70s and 80s when we had no fear of walking around the streets, day or night; or for for that matter, our son and daughter from ages 5 and 6 to 21. Sure, there are cases of injustice as anywhere but by golly it works well for the vast majority.
