If as Brenda you like communicating with flags, cant remember what the 2 hoist KT is although have a feeling I should. If were single hoists would if remember K you should stop your vessel instantly. And T do not pass ahead of me. Brenda being much younger and prettier will probably remember better, if wrong. Cheers John S

Brenda if you are using your fathers old seamanship books there may be some signals you may have to alter. The A flag does not now mean I am undergoing a Speed Trial. Its meaning now is I have Divers down give me a wide berth or words to that effect. Your wording on the D flag in 1957 was keep clear of me I am manouvering with difficulty. I ditched all my books years ago so am going by memory, If you have KT in any book of signals, I am sure it is a well known one, apart from Keith Tindall.. Cheers John S

All I can find in my old books are signals from towing vessel to towed vessel Towing vessel showing KT 'Shall I continue on present course I am increasing speed' KT flown by towing vessel 'Continue on present course and increase speed'

Knew it was probably something to do with towing but couldnt remember what. JS

Seems like another lifetime ago. On multi hoists it was the starboard Yardarm first then port yardarm then stabd, then back to port. Is that correct,?? Used to get complicated when using the 1 2 and 3rd substitutes. When nowadays you see on the rare occassions you see a ship dressed overall, I used to try and see if there was a message there or not, however think nowadays people just put them up to look pretty and no message, if there is it would probably be in Mandarin. Ship's signal letters always flown on starboard yard arm. most ships had them already permanently made up and close hauled to each other so that they were easy to hoist. 1st, 2nd and 3rd substitutes were always a bluddy nuisance, probably started a war at sometime by being misread. Had an acquaintance (yachtsman, sort of!) who bought a jersey in France with some International Code of signals on it, of which he was very proud, that is until I read it out to him 'go home Anglais'

Golf Romeo Delta Foxtrot sticks in my mind and beleive it was the call sign (signal letters ) of the first ship I was ever on. If it wasnt the first it must have been one of them, probably the worst. Bet Rob would know where to look to see if Alzheimers had started yet. JS

RNLI
An easy option would be to buy an RNLI tea towel with the International Flag Code. You could look at it as you are doing the drying up ( ! ) OR better still, when you are doing the ironing !!
