I have recently purchased two interesting volumes - Great Passenger Ships of the World Vols 4 and 5 covering the period 1936 - 1976. Both books are by Arnold Kludas and have photographs of the liners featured as well as technical info etc. For anybody interested in Passenger Liners, particularly if you sailed on them they are a really interesting read.

There will be a new book out later this year by a Tim Noble and Bill MIller.
Called East of Suez it is about ships, mainly liners, to Australia in the 1950's and 60's published in UK by Amberly press.

Hi shipmates, " Cardiff merchant navy history" ? I have the book used by the union office in Cardiff at {pennyless point} called that because when you run out of money you hung around for your shipmates with a few bob for {beer money} and any jobs on ships, the place has long gone into the history books The book starts in 1948 to 1982 updated by year in first class condition, all about pay rates terms and conditions for all ranks, and every thing else on board ship {british merchant ships only} I dont think another book like that one, can be found anywhere at any price a real pice of history

Lou thanks once again for the publication you made available the other day. Reading through the Runciman shipping I spotted 1 master I immediately remembered as he was the one who made me sit for many hours watching a dead man for any response back to life. maybe he knew it might come in handy in later life. He was Capt. T.H. Mathews and although he is not in my discharge book, as apprentices did not get discharges as such, remember him well. He apparently was on the Yorkmoor when intercepted by U. 506 and continued a running battle until abandoned later. He was questioned by the Uboat commander and approx an hour later the ship sank. Both lifeboats were spotted and survivors landed in the US later by the US Coastguard. Unfortuanetley some of he other masters names arent mentioned in the other Runciman losses, as believe I sailed with most of them who survived the war years, also the mates and crews. The author I. Malcolm is to be congratulated on such a pains taking searching and write up of british Shipping losses during those years. I hope future generations may look up at time to time and see what a big sacrifice was made for them in the past by such ships and crews. Hope you are well below the neck of the gin bottle by now. Cheers John S.
