Default Don't shoot the messenger either ?

Your obsevation seems quite right, I am just the messenger, glad to see others not only take note, but take notice and can see much that passed me by. I sought only the tribute and remembrance angle and as you say, it should be for all.

    Cheers,

Default We still know so little of the many:

Every name on every monument hides a tale, a life - much of we will never know:

May those that we locate more of forever represent the many.

Every name carved in stone, was a person, a life and much will never be known:

Hence, if we find much on one, it will ever be recorded for the many:

Goes without saying Keith that all on this site will remember MN DAY. Sad to say though Our Country has forgotten, have been monitoring all the news channels and not one mention on any of them, although a full three minutes was given to a Para-olympian, and whilst lauding the efforts of these athletes it in no way compares to the sacrifices made by our brethren past and present in keeping this country running. So far the words Merchant Navy have not been uttered, despite emails to the various channels, wot a load of sad unappreciative barstewards.

A great attendance yesterday in Liverpool, both at St Nicks church and the Pier Head. The amount of people was increased owing to some Tall Ships leaving the Albert Dock, and I and other exMN had the honour of explaning to these visitors the reason for our gathering ,with Standards flying and the Band playing. During the Pier Head service, the Sun came out and the Tall Ships passed in Line Ahead,a wonderful backdrop to a wonderful Day.

Default Merchant Navy Day commemorated by maritime workers:

Maritime Union of New Zealand members around the country and at sea are acknowledging Merchant Navy Day (3 September) today.

Maritime Union General Secretary Joe Fleetwood says the Merchant Navy Day commemorates merchant seamen and their contribution especially during times of war.

He says that merchant seamen continue to serve in a potentially dangerous industry that a maritime trading nation like New Zealand depends on.

In 2010 the New Zealand Government announced that they would join Britain and other Commonwealth countries to commemorate those who served in the Merchant Navy in the Second World War.

The date chosen was 3 September as this observes the sinking of the first British merchant ship in 1939, just hours after the war was declared.

During the Second World War, 4,700 Allied merchant vessels were sunk and 30,000 merchant seamen on the Allied side lost their lives.

    Default CANADA:

    Remembering our merchant navy vets:

The 10th annual memorial service for merchant navy veterans, held at Sackville Landing on the Halifax harbourfront on Labour Day morning, could be the last.

The veterans average age is 88 and time is catching up to those who contributed so much to Canada’s war effort, said Capt. Earle Wagner.

The local Canadian Merchant Navy Veterans Association is down to 13 members, and from the outset they planned to close down when their numbers dwindled past 12, said Wagner.

If they can’t continue, they intend to give their momentoes to Yarmouth Consolidated Senior High School, which has supported them well over the years, Wagner said.

Monday’s brief, dockside ceremony drew about 150 people. There were prayers, wreath-layings, speeches and a minute of silence for the thousands who died moving people and goods on the seas at wartime.

Nelson members of the Merchant Navy Association will mark Merchant Navy Day and remember the sacrifice of New Zealand and other merchant seamen during wartime. Former harbourmaster Gilbert Inkster told Bill Moore about his war:
