Default how lucky can you get

when i look back at time i was at sea during the war i think about those merchant seamen who was not so lucky people adrift in lifeboats for days weeks or even months suffering agonising deaths or permanent mental disorders those on the russian convoys who froze to death in the cold waters and those who had bad health caused through their time at sea after the war and died at a young age i am just ovar 85 years old and still reasonable fit bar for a earing aid //but it comes in handy when the wife gets on to me //so i consider myself very lucky having been married for 63 years and having a very loving family but i might not be the only ex seaman who is the same in boat

    Hi Lou.
Yes I guess you were very lucky to have survived the Gloucester Castle tragedy with around 95 killed, by the shelling, explosions and fires and then in the sea, picked up by the Germans and then battered , beaten and starved by the Japenese as slave labour. Any one of those could have killed you. An awful experience for a teenager.
I finally found Joe Farnworth`s family, his brother Dave, last week and gave him an account of the tragedy that I had written about it. I told him your story of Joe being injured before the shelling and due to his injuries he was unable to get out.
I last saw Joe around the 20th of June 1942 when Dave and I, we were 7 years old , helped to carry his sea bag to the bus stop on his way to join the Gloucester Castle. I said "Where are you going Joe ?" He said "To Africa", Me and Dave said "Wish we were going to Africa," with childish visions of Tarzan etc.
It was not until 1945 that they officially found out that Joe was dead.

    Cheers
    Brian.

Default How lucky can you get

Or in this case how unlucky can you get!

When his .38 calibre revolver failed to fire at his intended victim during a hold-up in California, would be robber James Elliot did something that can only inspire wonder. He peered down the barrel of the gun and tried the trigger again.................this time it worked

    Hello Lou,

Unfortunately I dont have those records in my data. Her 1942 last Crew Agreements are available from Kew held under her Official No. 132592. They are held in file BT 381/1798. There is an order and viewing option at the link below. If you can get someone to visit Kew for you, there is no charge apart from photocopying. If using the online alternative it can be quite expensive.

There is also details at Kew in BT 373/134 MERCHANT SEAMEN PRISONER OF WAR RECORDS 1939 to 1952

These records contain the names of those men captured from merchant ships and where they were held in captivity. These records also include additional information supplied by the Red Cross and also information regarding the deaths of POW’s.

This will probably be a cheaper option than her Crew Agreements if ordering online as their research department can go straight to this file as they are held under the ships name.
