    Default Tintern Abbey, 1916

    Greetings,

Thanks so much for adding me to your group. I am looking for information about my husband's grandfather's ship, the Tintern Abbey. He was supposedly in Russia in or before 1916, and the ship was used to transport food and supplies to Imperial Russia, and possibly transport refugees out. He received a "badge" that read Imperial Russia Transport Service, written in English and Russian. It shows to figures atop maps of England and Russia.

Also, and this may be unrelated, we understand that his ship (which may have been said Tintern Abbey) was also torpedoed by the Germans in WWI, and left to sink, but the crew was rescued.

Any information y'all might have on the ship or the mission, or other internet sites to try, would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Seem to be a possible three different vessels all named Tintern Abbey.

The first Tintern Abbey was launched on 20 April 1909 by Richardson Duck, Thornaby for Abbey SS Co. Ltd. She was sold to Russia in 1921 and became Jacov Sverdlov. She was scuttled at Molotovsk in 1946.

    I will look further ASAP.

    Have a look at
    https://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?203392
which will show you where the wreck is, and some information about the history of this particular Tintern Abbey. I say that, because another ship of that name was built in 1939.

Cheers Ray, from the heading 1916 would indicate
one of the earlier vessels, not much more can be done
without further communication and clarification from Lucinda.

    Regards,

    Keith.

I'm so sorry. It's been a rough couple of weeks, and on top of it I neglected to keep safe my information regarding the name and my user id for this site, so I had been unable to find you all again.

Please accept my thanks for your assistance, as well as my apologies.

My husband's grandfather was Robert Duncan Anderson. Born in 1878, I believe, in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He was a ship's engineer.
I agree that the 1909 or 1910 dates for the Tinturn Abbey are the most logical, since he was on board in 1916.

    Thanks again for your help.
