Any info as to actual place of birth ?

Nothing found in usual places thus far hence, the request for more info.

    Keith.
Hi Keith, thank you for your message. I put together a list of events with info that hopefully will help. This information is based on what my mother-in-law gave me, and research on different sources (mainly familysearch and findmypast).

01/10/1909 William Watson Miller, born in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland
I couldn’t find records of his birth either but my mother-in-law’sister has the papers showing this. I have asked for photos/scans but I haven’t been very lucky yet. Their dad has been a little bit of a tabu in the family and their mum got rid of pretty much everything that had his dad in it. I was sceptical at the beginning but all the other dates they provided were confirmed in documents I found. The same with his jobs as bus driver and steward on a ship (possibly P&O). They also know he worked as an engineer.
Father: John William Miller. Born 11th Aug 1873 in Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. Died in 1951 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Mother: Wilhelmina McGlownie Miller (maiden name: Watson)
Born 11 th Nov 1883. Died 17th April 1973 at 90yrs old in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Brother: Robert Haldan Miller. Born 17th Nov 1905. Died 26th June 1982 in Melbourne, 77yrs old. No children
Sister: Ivy Haldane Miller (married name Green but divorced). Born 1st Sept 1907. Died 2nd Sept 1987, 80 yrs old. No children.

All dates were provided by my mother-in-law and confirmed via:
    - births: findmypast, MyHeritage and familysearch.org
    - deaths: familysearch.org and Springvale Botanical Cemetery (Melbourne)

17/05/ 1910 Emigration of the Miller Family from London to Australia in the ship Orsova, Orient streamline
Record: Passenger List leaving UK 1890-1960

School: The Geelong College – letters from William to his family
I found the contact of the school archive so I will email them to find more information

October 1938: marriage to Maud Florence Scotchford, Islington, London
Record: England & Wales Marriages 1837-2005, Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records

12/03/1939 Birth of daughter Denise Haldane Miller, Hackney
Birth certificate record: London bus driver

    1939 Register:
William W Miller, 01/10/1909, Hackney, LPTB bus conductor

26/08/1944 Birth of daughter Carole Ann Miller, Epping, Essex
Birth certificate record: Engineer automatic setter

Last information I have from him are on the card attached on the original post, which matches the time when he left. My mother-in-law and her sister were told that he was going back to Australia to find a house so they could join him. The letters between their mum and their grandmother Wilhelmina stopped in early 1950s. They think she didn’t want to say anything about her son but after finding that she lost her husband at the time, it makes me think that that could have been a reason for her not to be fully herself.

Please let me know if you can think of anything else that could help. I basically summarised pretty much everything I know so apologies for the extensive message. I can send you the records I have found if you would like to see them.

    Thanks again,
    Maria

Hi Doc and Billy (Deep Sea?), I have the same doubt, why if it was after 1941 it came up in those records...

I’m looking into everything you have been providing me with, yesterday I stayed until 2:30am. I’m very greatful to you all!

I find it a little bit difficult because I’m trying to understand a whole new world to me and fitting this in between university and job hunting. I will get there eventually

Just to confirm. The Discharge number R506075 would have been unique to him even if he was rejoining?

From what I have seen, these records aren’t available online but I could access them by going to the National Archive or Southampton Archive, or by ordering copies? Is that correct? Some of the records are available on findmypast as you mentioned before but my question is for those that aren’t on that search website.

    Thanks,
    Maria

    Yes Maria
A far as I am aware in most all cases that would be his unique Number issued to him on Joining.
Possibly in very rare cases there mat have been a different Number issued but that I stand corrected on.
Only the Seamans Pouches BT372 (Most that is) are available Online Maria and also in some cases are the BT382 but have found that the latter are hard come by online too mush work for them at the NA ,but cannot blame them as there are so many requests .
Wish you all the luck in your researching futher into all this!
    Cheers

    PS Always also remember that
there could be two seamen with the same discharge number but one will have a prefix depending on what year he joined the service so don't look for a Number without a Prefix as your has the R

So must have been appended after he had received his dis book during the war either that or a different dis. Book was issued. However his discharge number would have remained the same. JS
Hi JS, thank you for your message! You are absolutely right, I didn’t think of it! The card is definitely from 1948 or after as it includes the National Insurance number.

    Thanks,

Thank you, Keith. I finally received a photo of the birth certificate and the date of birth is correct.

My name is Maria Campbell and I live in Surrey, southeast England. I registered to this site because I'm helping my mother-in-law find some information about her dad who she last saw in 1949 (70 years ago! She was only a little girl).

I found that he registered in the British Merchant Navy (I attached the card I found). It belongs to the BT364 series, between 1918-1941. ......................................

Thank you in advance for your time, any details would be of great help!

    Best,
    Maria
    Hi All,

I’m at the Southampton Archive, the ladies here found the card and the photo of the man with the same R number but unfortunately the photo doesn’t match the William Watson Miller I’m looking for.

But today I received new information from my mother-in-law saying that he left in the Stratheden P&O to Australia around 1949, he left as a purser or steward. She also sent me photos of his passport expiring 1937. It’s a Commonwealth of Australia passport.

I will try to find more info with the new details. If you can thing of anything, everything helps!

Thank you so much for all your help!

    Regards,
    Maria
