Researching my father, John James Gormanly
hello everyone...
I've just recently registered with this site. I'm researching my father, John James Gormanly (deceased since 2011), who served during WWII, and beyond then.
He was born in 1920 in Ireland. I have an identity card issued by Captain of Port (New York) in September 1944, which describes his citizenship as British. It has a serial number, but I don't understand its relevance (or irrelevance). The sponsor ship was Furness Withy.
Scant information, I know. But I would truly welcome any tips on where to begin the research to locate his records.
Thanks! Louise

May take some time and require any other information for best help.
Irish Mariners site result:
Your search found 0 records.
You may also want to consider searching for the following similar surnames which are on the database: Grimley Gormly Gormley
Hence asking if the full name is correct.
Early days but, will help as much as possible.

Have also looked at a few sites I use and as yet no name of that comes up? Rather strange ,so I am just wondering although it may have state that he was British,is there a possibility that he served in the USA Mercantile Marine ??
Will however keep looking!

Re: Researching my father, John James Gormanly
Thanks for your response, Vernon.
Not sure why he was registered as British as he was born in Ireland. He went to UK in 1916-1917 to work. Not sure the circumstances of his registering or why it would say British (was that normal or abnormal during war time for non-British marines)?
But, yes, definitely he served in UK merchant navy and not US.

Re: Researching my father, John James Gormanly
Ireland gained its independence from British Rule in 1922, so he would still be classed as British until then.
