The First Ship the HMS Ganges
HMS Ganges was a training ship and later stone frigate of the Royal Navy. She was established as a boys' training establishment in 1865, and was based aboard a number of hulks before moving ashore. She was based alternately in Falmouth, Harwich and Shotley. She remained in service at RNTE Shotley until October 1976.

Thanks, that's interesting. The photo I have of him standing on deck with some mates is the Orient from what I can see on one of the hatbands. It doesn't show much of the ship.

Yes health and safety was not applied in early 50's Just before sailing from Glasgow, Captain P B Owens called me to his cabin and told me the company said cadets were not to go higher than the top of mast houses. Drop the pilot and called by Captain to put up his radio areal, which entailed climbing the mainmast with a heaving line, areal attached to be secured to rails. Great fun!

I found and downloaded his CR2 in the Merchant Navy category at the Archives several years ago so I haven't a clue. Another photo I have of him in uniform with his family but I cannot read the name on his hat. This photo was taken at Portsmouth August 6th 1938, last drill, written on the back. I have another taken 1940. I will leave it for a while, maybe my Aunt in Australia can find a few clues in old photos etc she might still have.

    Thanks for help
