Default Good Hope Castle Crew Members 1972

Hello my name is Allan Low and I served on the Good Hope Castle in 1972, the year the ship blew up! Just wondering if there are any other crew members on this site.

Hope to hear from anyone to share old stories.

    Allan

    Hello Allen
    Welcome to the site!
There are quite a few here who served with the UCL and I hope that with given time some may be able to reply, those that may recall or have been on that Ship!
I was also with UCL but a ways before that time!
    Cheers

    Bringing back the past! LOL

    Welcome Allan.

I was a galley boy on the "Good Hope" A home trade trip, 25-25-55 to 15-3-55, and way before your time. The world was flat back in those days and there might be dragons beyond the worlds edge...I suppose that's why I did only a home trade on her. Welcome again, and post some yarns.

    Hi Rodney
That was the old GOOD HOPE CASTLE, I did the last three trips on her and took her to Hong Kong Breakers in June 1959.
good Job on deck good crowd, and good times.

Hi Allan The Captain of the AMSTERDAM, of Holland America, was a Cadet on the Good Hope Castle when they abandoned ship, he spent three days in a lifeboat and landed in Ascension Island
He is Jonathon Mercer Did you know him. I have sailed a few times with him on the world Cruises. I think this year is his last before retirement , hi lives on an island near Florida,

We were discharging in Southampton when the news came through, we (Clan Ranald) thought we would get the mail run, as we were that fastest B&C ship in Soton.
I think it was the Clan Maclean, which took on the mail run.

Hi. I was with Jonathon in said lifeboat. The hospitality we enjoyed on Ascension Island was great - the US guys made us welcome in The Turtle Club bar. Arriving at Luton Airport after the flight home from Ascension the Customs Officer stepped onto the coach, took one look at us, and said "O.K." (All we had was the clothes which the guys on the base had kindly provided + a change of clothes from the PX.)
