Yes Keith that was my self on the Bootle site...I do have a bit of information about them...it's there Merchant Navy information that I wanted to know more about...I only found out by chance that Edith was still working as a stewardess in the late 1930's by getting on the 1939 site on FMP...I only met the lady once...I also found out on line that they had lost two children before 1911...and have managed to find the death certificate of one of the children...I was only 15 when we lost my mother we lived in Wales and her family which had mostly passed away lived in Liverpool..
    Thanks for your help.

    Thelma
There is a distinction between crew members and staff on board liners.
Ship's crew are employed on a contract termed Articles and they are employed to take the ship from A to B. They are split into deck, engine and catering basically. The deck department take charge of navigating the ship between ports, the engine department look after all the propulsion and ancillary machinery whilst the catering department look after the feeding of all on board along with serving them meals and cleaning cabins etc. For this they receive a fixed monthly salary paid by the ships owner or manager. All these departments are also charged with the safety of the ship, it's crew and passengers.
Then there are what is termed staff on board. These are the likes of the entertainers, shop assistant, tour guides, hairdresser and spa workers etc. (Hotel services staff) and it is these worker's who will have most interaction with the passengers and are often mistaken for ships crew, but they will be employees of specialised agencies rather than the ship owner, so strictly speaking they are not ship's crew.
    Rgds.
