Hello
Hello all,
I've joined to hopefully gain some knowledge of the MN during the Second World War. I intend to wear the uniform as a reenactor at some of the 1940s events I attend as the MN are hardly ever represented at such shows.
I have had a few relatives in the MN. My grandfather was was a stoker on the Tay Ferry during the 1920s and beyond and his cousin was a crew member of the Terra Nova which went to the aid of Scott's Antarctic expedition in 1903.

Re: Hello
Hello Jim C
Thanks for joining and with a wee bit of time I am sure there will be those who may give you some insight of the MN.
Can you elaborate as to what you actually want!?
Please enjoy the site!
And yes not half enough recognition is given to the Merchant Navy as to what they did for all !
Cheers
ps what was the name of that Tay Ferry ? As were there not a few of them?
Cheers

Re: Hello
Went on the Discovery as a kid after the war when she was moored at the Thames Embankment by Cleopatra's Needle,
I can still remember it quite clearly, it sayed with me as it was the first ship I'd ever been on, she's in Scotland now, I
wouldn't mind seeing her again just out of nostalgia. JFC

Re: Hello
Thank you for your replies to my post.
Here is a Dundee Herald newspaper cutting from January 1920 which may be of interest about Thomas Cosgrove and his part in Captain Scott's rescue in 1903.

Re: Hello
Hi Jim, I've followed links to this site because I've been asked if I know where the gravestone of Thomas Cosgrove is - by one of his nephews (or great-nephew? ) who will be your distant relative, I guess. He thinks that Thomas is buried in one of the Fife graveyards along the Tay since (if I remember rightly) he lived on the Mars training ship based at Wormit as a boy. I can only imagine this was the same man as your grandfather's cousin. If you know more please could you post here? - the auld fella I'm trying to help would be very pleased to know.

Re: Hello
Hi Keith, thanks for asking. Any of that info would have made my life so much easier! The Courier article posted by Jim suggests Thomas was born in 1877, I'm guessing Dundee / Angus (he was apparently on the Mars training ship moored off Dundee as a boy) and my old pal thinks he died in the late 50s / early 60s, but other than that I can't find a trace of him on any of the ancestry or graves websites. Which of course makes the search all the more addictive...
EDIT - I've found the man, and he is buried on land (I'd started to think maybe buried at sea). I have more searching to do but let me recommend the website ScotlandsPeople | Connecting Generations. The story of the Mars training ship is worth reading about too - those boys had a tough start to life. Thanks again for trying to help.
