Welcome Jeffrey, maybe you could clarify the 3m FGN and 2m HT bit. Maybe a typing error on your behalf ?? JWS ps there is no such thing as a 3m fgn neither is there such a thing as 2 m HT. Certificates. JS

    Hi J Sabourn,
Sorry for late reply I haven't been on this site since January. I served with Cory Maritime Ltd (Wm Cory) of London, as deck cadet from 1968 - 1971 and was promoted to 3rd Mate Foreign Going (3m FGN). In November '72 I sailed on one of their colliers, Corsea, as 2nd Mate Home Trade (2m HT) until it was sold to a Greek Cypriot company and we handed it over on 19th December '72 at Barking Power Station on the River Thames. From 1973 I went back Deep Sea as 3rd Mate. I hope this clarifies your questions.

    HI Jeffrey.
I sailed on one of Corry' the Corfleet in March 57, the usual trips Seham, Middlesbro, Blyth etc to London, mainly Battersey power station. Had some hairy times sculling ashore in the Thames. Hope you enjoy all there is to peruse on the site.
    Cheers Des

Thanks for your reply Des, nice to hear from you.
March 57 umm I was only 6 years old then. Had some good times in Cory's. Apart from the ore carriers which I was on, with regular runs to Canada, I had the unfortunate pleasure of taking the Corsea to Sept Isles in Canada to load scrap metal for San Sebastion in Northern Spain. Not a pleasant run for an old collier, we had to follow the Corstar and had to be 10 days apart arriving in both Canada and Spain. Unfortunately for the Corstar she had to pull a piston on her way back across the Atlantic, very bad weather force 7/8 so all hands down to the engine room except the cooks and stewards.
From Spain we went back to Swansea and loaded coal for 2 ports in Italy then across to Durres in Albania to load chrome ore for Rostock, then to Poland to load pig iron for UK. Eventually returning to N.E Coast - Thames coal run until she was sold. Happy Days.
    Cheers Jeff

    Hi Jeffrey.
I can imagine what the crew on the Corstar had to put up with, in 52 got caught in a hurricane going across to Canada on an old rust bucket, seas recorded at one hundred feet high, so bad a ship sank only eleven miles away and we couldn't do a thing to help.
    Cheers Des

Hi Des, thanks for your reply. Spent a lot of time crossing North Atlantic on Cory's iron ore ships. between 68 & 74. Was on Queensgarth in 71when we got caught in a hurricane and the barograph fell of the bottom of the cart. We were also a weather reporting ship and Canadians recognized us in the end, after 4 days of being battered by the storm and put our call sign "GDSE" in the middle of the low. Happy days. Jeff

A regular if remember right in Port Talbot also. Cheers JWS. Think she lay there all during the seaman’s strike in 1966. JS.
