John Dixon 1860s India

I'm pulling together my family tree for my mum for Christmas and I wondered if anyone could help me find more details on her gt,gt, gt grandfather John Dixon (born 1828 in Meath, Ireland).
I believe he was a merchant seaman and was a timekeeper. He was in India in 1868 and 1871 as his children were born there in those years in Bengal, India.
By the 1881 census he was back in the U.K. With his family in Northumberland.

I can't find him on any lists. I'd really like to know if it's possible to find out what he was doing there and how long he lived and worked there and which ships he was on so I can look up their history for my mum.

Any help/advice much appreciated.
